IRAQ on 11 September 2006 issued a set of First Day Cover (FDC) stamps highlighting the rich ancient history of Iraq, often referred to as Mesopotamia, the "Cradle of Civilization". Postmark cancellation originated from Baghdad.
Ancient Mesopotamian artifacts and figures pictured in the stamps:
- Left stamp (200 Fils) depicted a Lamassu, a protective deity from ancient Assyrian mythology, often depicted with a human head, the body of a lion or bull, and bird's wings.
- Middle stamp (150 Fils) showed a Bull's Head Lyre, a prominent example of Sumerian art and music from the Royal Tombs of Ur.
- Right stamp (1000 Fils) featured the Bronze head of an Akkadian king of Nineveh Sumerian civilization.
