Belgique Poste Sabena Memorial Flight from Bastogne

BELGIQUE POSTE on 4 July 1946 issued two airmail stamps honouring the American forces of the 101st Airborne who liberated Bastogne. The stamps appeared on a special cachet and postmark cancellation marking the Belgian airline Sabena's memorial flight from Bastogne to Brussels, then on to Washington D.C.

As a tribute to American soldiers lost during the war, the plane transported a sample of soil from the Bastogne battlefield to the Arlington military cemetery near Washington.
