INDIA POST on 13 December 2006 issued a miniature stamp sheet depicting an elephant harvesting sandalwood. The stamp had a sandalwood scent on it. Three million stamps were printed using the photogravure method. India Security Press, Nashik printed the stamps.
Sandalwood is an integral part of Indian Heritage, hence the issuance of this commemorative postage stamp as a national treasure. It is one of the most expensive woods in the world and is known for its enchanting fragrance. Unfortunately, these trees grow slowly and have been over-harvested in the last hundred years. India is one of the largest producers of sandalwood, apart from other countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc.
