ÖSTERREICH POST on 12 April 2006 released a First Day Cover stamp of German footballer Franz Anton Beckenbauer (1945-2024), which was adapted from an artwork by Andy Warhol. Franking depicted the outline of a football field, whereas the cachet was a photo of Beckenbauer when he managed the Germany World Cup Champions. Special soccer field postmark cancellation originated from Vienna.
The stamp had a face value of 75 C. and was dedicated to this former West German football player, coach, official and president of the 2006 World Cup committee. Beckenbauer was also President of FC Bayern Munich and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of FC Bayern Munich AG. From 1998 to 2010 he was one of the DFB Vice Presidents on the DFB Presidium. His greatest successes were winning the 1974 World Cup as captain of the West German team and 1990 World Cup as Manager for Germany.
