COOK ISLANDS on 24 October 1967 issued a series of First Day Cover stamps dedicated to six artworks painted by French Post-Impressionist artist Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (7 June 1848 – 8 May 1903). Shown here are two FDCs and a mini souvenir sheet.
The artworks included:
1c - La Orana Maria
3c - Riders on the Beach
5c - Still Life with Flowers
8c - Whispered Words
15c - Maternity
20c - Why are You Angry?
Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognised for his experimental use of colour and synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time portrayed his idealistic view of the people and landscapes from that region.
