UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE on 14 July 1953 issued a First Day Cover stamp commemorating the centenary anniversary of the Opening Foreign Trade with Japan. The stamp highlighted Commodore Matthew Perry's negotiations with Japan that opened the nation to trade after more than 200 years of isolation. The stamp pictures Commodore Perry's ships in Tokyo Bay with Mount Fuji in the background and Perry's portrait in the upper-right corner. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing printed 89,289,600 copies using a Rotary Press method. Postmark cancellation for this FDC originated from Washington, D.C.
