Deutsche Post 2000th Anniversary of The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest

DEUTSCHE POST issued this 2009 First Day Cover stamp marking the 2000th Anniversary of The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest (Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald, Hermannsschlacht, or Varusschlacht). Roman historians described it as the Varian Disaster (Clades Variana), which took place in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE, when an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions and their auxiliaries, led by Publius Quinctilius Varus. The alliance was led by Arminius, a Germanic officer of Varus's auxilia. Arminius had acquired Roman citizenship and had received a Roman military education, which enabled him to deceive the Roman commander methodically and anticipate the Roman army's tactical responses.

Deutsche Post FDC of Stauffenberg and Moltke

DEUTSCHE POST issued this First Day Cover stamp of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and Helmuth Graf von Moltke in 2007.

Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg was a German army officer best known for his failed attempt on 20 July 1944 to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the Wolf's Lair and remove the Nazi Party from power. Along with Henning von Tresckow and Hans Oster, he was one of the central figures of the German resistance to Nazism within the Wehrmacht. For his involvement in the movement, he was executed by firing squad shortly after Operation Valkyrie.

Helmuth James Graf von Moltke  was a German jurist who, as a draftee in the German Abwehr, acted to subvert German human-rights abuses of people in territories occupied by Germany during World War II. He was a founding member of the Kreisau Circle opposition group, whose members opposed the government of Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany, and discussed prospects for a Germany based on moral and democratic principles after Hitler. The Nazi government executed him for treason for his participation in these discussions.

Deutsche Post FDC of Friedrich Ebert

DEUTSCHE POST issued this commemorative First Day Cover stamp in 2000 of Friedrich Ebert. He was a German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the first President of Germany from 1919 until his death in office in 1925.

Ebert was a pivotal figure in the German Revolution of 1918–19. When Germany became a republic at the end of World War I, he became its first chancellor. His policies at that time were primarily aimed at restoring peace and order in Germany and suppressing the left. In order to accomplish these goals, he allied himself with conservative and nationalistic political forces, in particular the leadership of the military under General Wilhelm Groener and the right-wing Freikorps. With their help, Ebert's government crushed a number of socialist and communist uprisings as well as those from the right, including the Kapp Putsch, a legacy that has made him a controversial historical figure.

Deutsche Post 100th Anniversary on Birth of Willy Brandt

DEUTSCHE POST in 2013 issued this 100th anniversary stamp on the birth of former West Germany Chancellor Willy Brandt. Featured here is the First Day Cover stamp and biographical card.

Deutsche Post 50th Anniversary of Kniefall von Warschau

DEUTSCHE POST 50th Anniversary of Kniefall von Warschau  (or Warsaw Genuflection) refers to a gesture of humility and penance by West Germany Chancellor Willy Brandt towards the victims of the Warsaw ghetto uprising.

Earlier on 7 December 1970, he had signed the Treaty of Warsaw, which acknowledged the Oder–Neisse line as the final German border with Poland.

In a Der Spiegel survey at the time 48% of West Germans considered it excessive. This Ostpolitik gesture and treaty was also not popular within his own political party. To Poland, the Jewish holocaust survivors and the rest of the world it meant Germany (West Germany) had turned a leaf in acknowledging its atrocities.

Now, 50 years on his spontaneous act of humility and penance has been honoured in a first day cover stamp, dated 7 December 2020.

See video of the event HERE.

Taiwan Post Famous Mosques in Taiwan

TAIWAN POST (Chunghwa Post) issued two First Day Cover stamps of the Taipei Grand Mosque and Taiching Mosque in 2020.  Interestingly, Islam first reached Taiwan in the 17th century when a few Muslim families from the southern Chinese coastal province of Fujian accompanied Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong). He invaded Taiwan to oust the Dutch from Tainan in 1661, thus establishing the Kingdom of Tungning. From that time, and under trying times during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan when foreign religions were forbidden, the Muslim population underwent great change, yet continued to flourish after 1945. From what I have read I understand there are around 60,000 Muslims in Taiwan, of which about 90% belong to the Hui ethnic group. I am also aware that there are more than 180,000 foreign Muslims working in Taiwan from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, as well as other nationalities from more than 30 countries. And as of 2018, there are eleven mosques in Taiwan, with the most notable being the Taipei Grand Mosque, the oldest and largest one. I see too that Taiwan promotes itself as a Muslim-friendly travel destination, and the country even has halal certification for food manufactured in Taiwan.

Taiwan Post Classical Chinese Poetry

TAIWAN POST (Chunghwa Post) issued a series of First Day Cover stamps dedicated to Classical Chinese Poetry, replete illustrations and passages from the poems: "Plum Blossoms" by Wang Anshi, "Orchid River" by Du Mu, "New Bamboo" by Zheng Banqiao and "Chrysanthemums" by Yuan Zhen Shown are four of the stamps in this set which were issued in 2018 and 2019.
