Special Pony Express Delivery

22ND ANNUAL SADDLEBAG MAIL -- a special Pony Express Delivery from Idaho Springs to Central City, Colorado issued in 1969. Rocky Mountain News,  founded by William Byers in 1859 and once the oldest newspaper in Colorado,  sponsored the event. The newspaper is now defunct having ceased operation in 2009.

The 6-cent US postage stamp  was part of the four-stamp series issued in 1969 to publicize the national beautification programme championed by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson. This particular "Beautification of America" stamp featured a design entitled "Beautiful Parks".

My maternal grandmother had this letter posted to me in the summer of 1969 when I lived with them. As I recall it was the first cover I received and more followed from my grandmother.
