Libya Honours Omar al-Mukhṭār 2014

Mint
stamp from Libya honouring their national hero, Omar al-Mukhṭār Muḥammad bin Farḥāṭ al-Manifī, on Martyr's Day 2014.

Omar Mukhṭār and his Senussi forces fought the colonial army of Mussolini's facist Italy for over 20 years in eastern Libya. He was eventually captured when his horse stumbled and fell. Italy offered to spare his life should he reveal his collaborators. He refused, was hung and died shahid in 1931. He remains a national hero not only in Libya but a symbol of resistance in the Arab and Islamic worlds.
