NAROMPOCHTEL USSR in 1991 issued a First Day Cover stamp of the 7th century Sangin Mosque located in Tajikistan.
The
construction of the Sangin Mosque started in the 12th century and
lasted till the 16th century. The mosque’s name is translated as “Made
of stone”. Its name is connected with one of the unique features of the
building. The mosque’s lower masonry is laid with stone blocks to half
of its height.
Local legend of the Sangin Mosque contends it was initially built in the 7th century by the order of the Caliph Umar.
